Curator Project in preparation for the opening of Leeds Museum and Art Gallery

Eve, Jack, William R and Isabelle in Year 4, are working on a 'Curator Project' with other schools in the Brigshaw Learning Partnership.

The project kicked off a couple of weeks ago with a behind the scenes tour of Leeds Museum where the children could see up to a million artefacts stored on shelves and in cabinets. These potential exhibits are waiting to be selected for display in the recently refurbished Leeds Museum and Art Gallery which is due to be reopened in Autumn this year.

The second part of the project involved children from across the Brigshaw Learning Partnership working with a member of the Leeds Museum and Art Gallery team at Kippax Ashtree, to look at several pieces of Art and talk about how they made them feel. There were as many interpretations as there were children in the room!

Pieces of famous works of art that appeared unappealing at first, soon became the focus of passionate interest and discussion as children reflected on each piece thoughtfully.

As the afternoon wore on, children were given the task of being curators responsible for selecting a piece or art and building an exhibition around it.

They were asked to consider the space where the exhibition would be displayed, the theme which would link the collection together and the audience the children wished to interest and inspire!

The children from all the schools were full of amazing ideas and so articulate at expressing them.

The afternoon gave us a real insight into the real - life job of curators and the stimulating discussions they must have as they decide what to exhibit and why. The children are looking forward to using their learning to help them create an 'exhibition' in the next half term. Watch this space!
